(1723-1799)
   writer
Born in Bort-les-orgues, Jean-François Marmon-tel, who was brought to Paris by voltaire, acquired great celebrity at the royal court, and, later, in Europe, not only for his tragedies, but for his moral tales (Contes moraux, 1761-71) and, above all, for two ideological novels, Bélisaire (1767), which upheld the principle of tolerance, and Les Incas (1777), which stigmatized slavery. He collected his articles, written for the Encyclopédie of denis diderot, under the title Éléments de littérature (1787) and left unfinished his Mémoires d'un père (1804).
